The article "From Prison to Ph.D.: The Redemption and Rejection of Michelle Jones" by Eli Hager (2017) discusses the life story of Michelle Jones and her journey towards education herself during her 20-year prison sentence. After being convicted of murder and serving a lengthy sentence in Indiana State Prison and getting rejected from both Harvard and Yale, Jones was able to face her obstacles resiliently and is now completing her Ph.D in American Studies at NYU. In an interview, Jones stated, "But for 20 years, I've tried to do right, because I was still interested in the world, and because I didn't believe my past made me somehow cosmically un-educatable forever." Jones expresses that despite her circumstances and choices she made over 20 years ago, she still deserves the opportunity to receive an education just like everybody else. She faced the consequences of her actions, and during her sentence, she very clearly demonstrated signs of wanting to rebuild her life and become a contributing member of a society. Just like everybody else, her past should not hinder her ambitions, goals, and who she aspires to be in the future.
